Mavor Moore (1919-2006)

"Master of all arts", Mavor Moore is a passionate creator who has been a life force in Canadian culture. Actor, writer, producer, director, librettist, critic, essayist, arts administrator and teacher, there is nothing-with the possible exception of ballet dancing-that he has not done.

Author of many dramatic works in various media, including opera, he has served the most important and interesting stories in our history. As co-writer/producer he presented the stage production of what's become the longest-running story in Canadian drama, Anne of Green Gables.

He is the founder of a vast range of artistic projects. Many of them became Canadian institutions, such as Spring Thaw, the Charlottetown Festival, the Canadian Theatre Centre and Toronto's St. Lawrence Centre.

His life has been a cornucopia of ideas and actions poured out in the cause of making the arts in Canada matter. Coupled with his talents has been his generosity to others and his ability, indeed his insistence, on bringing out the best in them.

The first artist to chair the Canada Council, he is a Companion of the Order of Canada and a Member of the Order of British Columbia. The Molson Prize and seven doctorates are also among his many honours.
