2016 recipient announcement coming soon!

It won’t be long before the 2016 GGPAA laureates are announced. Watch the announcement live from Phi Centre in Montreal on April 14 at 11:30 a.m. EST. We’re thrilled to be back at Phi Centre this year. You can watch all the excitement on the National Arts Centre’s website.

We want YOU to nominate

Every year the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards are given to artists and volunteers from across the country who have made a significant impact on Canada’s cultural life. Our past recipients include Bryan Adams, Mary Walsh, Tom Jackson, Sarah McLachlan, Karen Kain, Atom Egoyan and many more. You can learn more about our laureates by reading their biographies. Since 2008 the National Film Board of Canada has created short films in tribute to each laureate. These films have been funny, touching, thought-provoking and fascinating. You can watch all of them on our website.

In addition to the names mentioned, I’d like to draw your attention to the recipients of the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts. That award is given to a dedicated arts volunteer who has worked tirelessly giving time and/or money to different fields within the arts. Some of our RJH laureates have chosen to support dance while others have supported Canadian film or opera companies in this country. Arts volunteers play a crucial role in supporting Canadian culture and we want to honour them.

All this to say, nominations for the Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award and the RJH Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts are open to the general public. Is there a Canadian artist whom you admire and whose work has meant a lot to you over the course of many years? We need YOU to nominate an artist from one or more of the following disciplines: broadcasting, classical music, dance, film, popular music and theatre. If you have worked with, or been touched by a volunteer’s significant contribution, nominate them today. Due to Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations and the GGPAA Foundation’s 25th anniversary in 2017, we are getting a head start on the nominations cycle in order to secure recipients and Gala performers in a year when Canadian talent will be in high demand. The deadline for nominations is April 29.

You don’t think you’re qualified to make a nomination? You’re “just a fan,” you say? We want you to nominate! Whether you’re a lifelong fan of an artist or group or have only recently discovered a Canadian artist you love, if you think they’re deserving of a Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award, submit a nomination today. The process is simple and straightforward. All you need to submit is a biography and a nomination form. If an artist is an actor in both film and theatre, for example, you can check the boxes for both the film and theatre categories on the form to have him or her considered in each category. There are so many artists who have yet to be nominated. Please visit ggpaa.ca/nominate for all the forms and information.

We look forward to receiving your nominations and hope you’ll join us online during the recipient announcement.

Check back after the recipient announcement. Until then,

Jami
