Canada's Walk of Fame, Arts Nation, recipient update and more

Throughout the fall, there has been a lot going on with our laureates and supporters of Arts Nation. The deadline for nominations for the 2016 Awards was September 18. In October, our juries met to discuss the nominees. The lists from each of the juries will now go to the GGPAAF board of directors. Once the recipients have been chosen, they will be announced to the public at an event on April 14 at the Phi Centre in Montreal and live-streamed on the National Arts Centre’s website. Spring seems a long way away when we’re still approaching winter but we’ll get there. Keep an eye on our site for the big announcement. Until then, you can make a nomination for the 2017 Awards. In preparation for Canada’s 150th and the 25th anniversary of the GGPAA in 2017, the deadline for nominations for the 2017 Awards is now April 29, 2016. Nominate an artist or volunteer today.

We’re quickly approaching Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017. To mark the milestone, we’re spreading the word about Arts Nation. We want the entire nation and the world to celebrate Canada as Arts Nation. It is the perfect time for Canadians to get excited about our talented artists and to take pride in the in this country. Please join us and help spread the word.

Congratulations to all the wonderful recipients who were honoured with stars on Canada’s Walk of Fame on November 7. Past jury member Wendy Crewson talked about Canada being an Arts Nation at the earlier press announcement and on the red carpet. Another artist who received his star this year was singer Michael Bublé. Canada’s Walk of Fame recognizes great Canadians of all backgrounds, from athletes to artists. You can see pictures from the gala and nominate an artist to be recognized in 2016.

With the world reeling from recent events in Paris, artists have come together in a show of solidarity. The Canada Council hosted an event on November 16 to honour the victims in France. On November 17 Margie Gillis participated in a rally at Montreal’s Place des Arts where she spoke about the collective sense of loss and need for compassion. At the GGPAA Foundation, our hearts go out to all those affected by the attacks.

We’d also like to highlight Tom Jackson who has a busy season ahead. His new book of inspirational phrases, “364” was released November 23 and his latest album “Ballads Not Bullets” came out in October. Tom’s annual Huron Carole tour in support of food banks begins on November 28 in Newfoundland. This year’s tour is a bit different as each tour stop is a gala evening. Visit the Huron Carole website for more information.

Thanks for reading. We wish you a joyful holiday season.
